That question is “What if?” What if the world was turned upside down? What if there was life on other planets? What if we made robots that were smarter than humans? What if Ireland won the World Cup? Admittedly the last question is a little too fantastical, but every time you ask “What if?” it leads you somewhere.įor example, what if there was life on other planets? If your story instincts are kicking into gear you’ll be asking yourself, what kind of life is it? Will it be aliens who look like us, or will they have tentacles and three heads? Will they be friendly aliens or aggressive? Can they travel to Earth? Already you’re looking for answers. I read outloud the Writing Advice from Pádraig Kenny, author of Tin.Ī lot of the time when I write a story it starts with a simple question, probably the most important question of all for any writer who’s writing something fantastical. ‘A world where everything’s upside down?’īeep! Clearly this author spent most of his time messing around online instead of writing, because his reply had arrived almost immediately. I rustled up some scrap paper and laid it out on the desk, grabbed a pen and asked Aoife, ‘Okay, any ideas for our story setting?’Īoife lay down on the floor and stared up at the ceiling. Mr Kenny, we need your help! How do you invent fantastical settings for stories? Please reply immediately! Liam and Aoife. Like the world of leprechauns and elves in Eoin Colfer’s books or robot children in -’Ī few minutes later after we sat Dad in front of cartoons on TV like he was a toddler, we got working on his computer and sent out our email to a top author. ‘It’s a, it’s a world where a magical story or a science fiction or horror book takes place in. ‘It, ah, asked about the weather.’Īs Dad gazed at the phone open mouthed, I ran over to Aoife and read the third and final challenge.Īoife shook her head, ‘By midnight tonight I must be getting – that’s terrible English.’ ‘Liam!’ Aoife stood in her bedroom doorway waving a piece of old parchment. I hung up and jumped out of way as Dad burst into the room, banged off the far wall and hit the ground and lay there out of breath, asking ‘Did the machine talk to you? What did it say?’ He’d be back to normal before mam got home hopefully. Dad would get his memories and stories back. All we had to do was complete the third and final Story Challenge by Midnight tonight. ‘Ah.’ My mind thought through the day ahead of us. Any requests? French toast?’ĭad pushed on the door, but I shoved it closed again. ‘No, no!’ I put my foot against the door as the door handle turned. She would just make everything worse.ĭad knocked on my bedroom door, asking loudly, ‘Liam? Did it answer you?’ She’d think Dad was going crazy or something. I really wanted her help, but I stayed silent. I answered the phone as I ran into my room, closing the door behind me. I’ll answer.’ĭad gripped my pyjamas sleeve. The Story Thief had stripped another memory from him last night. I almost laughed then swallowed back tears. He pursed his lips and made a chirping sound, actually tried to mimic the ringing of the phone as if he was making a moo at a cow or miaowing back at a cat. He looked at me, his face scrunched up with confusion. I found Dad sitting up in his bed examining the phone from all angles as it rang. It rang for a long time then went silent then started up again. I was awoken around 10am by Dad’s phone ringing in his bedroom. Now we just had one more Challenge to complete – Like with Dad, if we failed any of the three challenges, it would take our memories and stories too.Īs Dad lost even more memories – he even forgot what an oven was – we completed two of the three story challenges with the help of top kids fiction writers. The Dad we knew and loved was vanishing in front of our eyes so we summoned the Thief and agreed to do its Story Challenges to win back Dad’s stories and memories. One by one, it stole Dad’s stories and then his memories too (because memories are just stories we tell ourselves). Dad got one wrong so the Thief won all our Dad’s stories. Our writer Dad’s books weren’t getting published so he tried to win a great story from the Thief by doing its three story challenges. It carries a massive pen like a spear and has a ledger on its back where it writes the stolen stories before hiding them away in its secret library. The mysterious Story Thief steals writer’s stories if they don’t write them down or tell them quickly. This is episode six of our twelve episode blog series about the crazy and scary things that happened to us last summer because of the Story Thief. Aoife is my annoying hyper sister. She’s seven. Note: If you’re a teacher or librarian or work with kids check out the guidance for educators section including advice on how to do this month’s Story Challenge!Įverything you need to know if you haven’t read the other episodes… How to use the Story Thief Challenges with kids?.

Then things got even wilder for the sequel.ĭef Jam: Fight for NY featured a cast of 45(!) real-world celebrities, compared with Vendetta ’s 14. Ludacris, Joe Budden, Method Man, Redman, DMX, and other superstars signed on to be in the original game, either playing themselves, or as in the case of Method Man, playing characters that looked and sounded exactly like them but had a different name. For Def Jam Vendetta, the developers enlisted a group of artists, both contemporary (well, for 2003) and legendary, to appear in the game and just beat the shit out of each other. No, the reason Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam: Fight for NY sold over 1.8 million copies worldwide and are fondly remembered to this day is their impressive character rosters, among the most extensive seen in gaming. The gameplay was solid, flashy, and satisfying, and if you were to go back and play Def Jam Vendetta or Def Jam: Fight for NY today, you’d be surprised by how well the mechanics hold up.ĭespite its quality, however, the game isn’t remembered for its fighting system, or for its over-the-top finishers. In true pro wrestling fashion, matches can’t just end with whittling down an opponent’s health bar either, players must perform an over-the-top finisher, land a submission move, or make use of a weapon or environmental hazard to actually knock the opponent out. The games in the series (well, up until AKI Corporation bowed out prior to 2007’s Def Jam: Icon) were wrestling-based brawlers, combining strikes and environmental hazards with AKI Corporation’s finely tuned grappling mechanics to create a combat system that was, for its time, dynamic and brutal. Pro Wrestling, But Make It Hip-Hopįor the uninitiated, back in the early ‘00s, AKI Corporation, a company that specialized in wrestling games - and was probably best known for developing the impeccable WWF No Mercy - teamed up with Electronic Arts to release a series of fighting games based around then-contemporary hip-hop culture that would become the Def Jam series of fighting games. And why not? It’s an attractive proposition, being able to market to fans of everyone involved, instead of just one specific niche, and that’s why all these big companies are trying to one-up each other with their next huge project.īut despite their huge budgets, impressive character lineups, and beefy marketing teams, none of these crossover events, past, present, or future, will ever come close to the brilliance that was 2004’s Def Jam: Fight for NY. to that horrific commercial where all of the other brand mascots show up to mourn the dead Peanut Man and celebrate the terrifying baby that crawled out of his corpse, huge corporations are trying to take advantage of fan loyalty by orchestrating these massive, ambitious crossover events. Of course, there has always been a rich history of crossovers in the history of TV, movies, and video games, but in this new, strange, late-capitalist world where a total of three or four companies have divvied up the rights to seemingly all of our favorite pieces of entertainment, a sort of crossover arms race has developed.įrom The Avengers to Suicide Squad to Super Smash Bros. “The most ambitious crossover event of all-time.” The claim was so ubiquitous in the marketing for Marvel’s The Avengers: Infinity War that it has since become a meme. I used a city and transported three workers one at a time and one after another. You’ll need to empty something of resources so that you can send a train out as soon as one single thing has been generated. Send 3 trains in a row with only one car each I did this one on level 2 whilst working on BBQ, Missed It!, and Prick of Conscience. You might think this is train mis-management, but you have to take some pretty specific actions and manage your train destruction! Simple to achieve, but you’re unlikely to get get it by accident. Mind you it needs to crash into the caboose not the engine! Highlanderįinish the level with only one train working You can also stop a train dead in its tracks and then allow a train to crash into the back of it. I had an upgraded train crash into a slower train by accident. Have one train crash into another from behind Return a train back to its departure stationĮasiest method is to send out a train of workers from a city, and then turn the train around letting it return to the same city. Some pitfalls include: delivering all 6 logs to the city rather than just 4 so that your last train deilvers 5&6 | not delivering your log train last | hitting pause on your log train because you realised your timing was off and it wasn’t going to be the last train | not making your log train the very first train to be sent out. Complete all of the other tasks on the level, and at the very end let the train exit the loop and deliver its goods to the city. Make a small loop of tracks, start a train with the logs and make it run on said loop. Note that at the beginning of the level there are already 2 logs at the lumber mill. In the current EA version of the game with only 20 levels, this achievement can only be done on level 5. Critical Care Forgottenĭeliver the first train in the end of the level without stopping it Therefore I would recommend setting up a tight intersection, pause one train close to the curve, and as another train goes past it unpause the train to go forward and almost hit the end of the other train. I did notice that both trains were moving at the time, although I had only just recently started one up. I’m sure most players will get it by accident too as they play the game. Have two trains pass by very close to each other Recommended levels: 11, Any further data on this one would be appreciated. I suspect that it was my raw log/wood production that did it for me. I thought that it was going to be a really tough one where one would have to babysit a specific producer for a whole game. Unfortunately this achievement simply happened to me. Recommended levels: 1 Without a Lunch BreakĬomplete any level having at least one resource produced the entire time Non StopĬomplete any level without pausing the gameĮasily done on the very first level, just don’t hit space bar. If you don’t tend to hit the pause button during play, you could always just sit there and spam space bar. Recommended levels: 1 The Hare with an EspressoĬomplete any level with 5 stars on 4x speed only.īegin the level and hit the 4x speed button. You can pause.Ĭomplete any level with 5 stars on 2x speed only.īegin the level and hit the 2x speed button. Get 5 stars on any level playing on normal speed only.īegin the level and complete it with all five stars. Finding the time may take some trial and error depending on how far away from the station you stop the train and what speed/level of train you’re trying to do it with. I recommend choosing a fairly short level to try getting this achievement so that if you fail you don’t have to wait too long for your next attempt. This took me two attempts – the first try I was 2 seconds too late because even a twice upgraded train (yellow) took longer to arrive at the station than I expected. When the timer is 9 seconds away from losing your third star (from the top) start up the train to deliver it just in time. (Don’t try this on a level that you’re not allowed to stop trains on or you’ll probably only get 4 stars). When you’re nearing the end pause a train right outside the station it needs to enter. Get 5 stars having the last train delivered within 5 seconds before the end of the timer. This will bring up a handy little search bar in one of your window’s corners. Hit Ctrl F on a PC or Command F on a Mac. If you want to look up a specific achievement, I don’t recommend trying to guess which of my arbitrary organisational sections it might be in. Choo-choo! Build an efficient railroad, upgrade your locomotives, and keep all trains on track to meet the ever-growing demand of the cities and industries in your tiny valley. Read more from Jake Spicer in his Artists & Illustrators figure drawing column Hold it out in front of you between your eye and subject to judge the spaces between the figure and the horizontal and vertical edges of the aperture. Use a viewfinder A viewfinder is a simple piece of card with a rectangle cut out of the middle that can be used to create clear external shapes around the body. You can then go back to your drawing and make sure that the ratio is the same. For example, you might measure the distance from shoulder to shoulder on your subject and discover that the measurement is the same as the distance from the top of the shoulder to the waist. Take a measurement and use it as a unit to compare with other distances. Use landmarks in the figure as reference points and check the relationships between them. The aim is to create a structure that can support your figure drawings, helping you understand both the shape of the body beneath the clothing and the anatomy beneath the skin. As you look at your subject, imagine the shapes of his or her joints and the major masses underpinning the pose. Simplified forms are commonly used to underpin illustrations of imagined figures they can also help you structure your observational drawing and identify the key masses of the body. Use the head, hands and feet to gauge the proportions of the rest of the figure. Use short, sharp lines to hone in on the outline of the figure, like a sculptor cutting away stone. Start by jotting in the top, bottom, left and right limits of the figure and sketching a simple shape that encompasses the whole. If you work only on detail, you run the risk of falling out of proportion as you get further from your starting point. To keep a figure in proportion, constantly switch between drawing the specific and drawing the whole. Improving your ability to judge the abstract shape of a space will help you when drawing the figure, whether you are drawing the shapes of shadows, items of clothing or masses of hair. If you come across a problem in the figure that you can’t easily solve, you can switch your observation to the shapes around the body, using the negative spaces as a way of checking and refining your initial drawing. By drawing all of the shapes around the body, you will inadvertently be drawing the silhouette of the figure.ĭrawing negative spaces isn’t a drawing technique in itself it is a perceptual tool that you can assimilate into your regular drawing practice. Improving your figure drawing often requires you to make more objective observations of the body, developing ways of seeing your subject free from preconceptions.ĭrawing the abstract shapes of the background around a figure will help you to see the outline of your subject more clearly these negative spaces needn’t include any detail, but simply represent shapes of space that are not the body. When we’re drawing figures we naturally bring all of our subconscious preconceptions about the body to our drawing, inhibiting clear observation of the subject.
While the Pomodoro Technique can be very effective, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. There are many Pomodoro timer apps available that you can use on your phone or computer. A timer can help you stay on track and avoid getting distracted. Get up and move around, do some stretching exercises, or go for a short walk. Use your breaks to recharge your brain and avoid burnout. During your Pomodoro intervals, turn off your phone, close your email, and block any other distractions that might disrupt your focus. Choose tasks that are important but not urgent, and focus on one task at a time. The Pomodoro Technique works best for tasks that can be broken down into smaller, manageable parts. To make the most of the Pomodoro Technique, keep these tips in mind: Repeat the process until the task is complete. After completing four Pomodoros, take a longer break (typically 15-30 minutes). When the timer goes off, take a short break (typically 5 minutes).Work on the task for the entire 25-minute interval, without any interruptions. To use the Pomodoro Technique, follow these simple steps: By breaking down your work into manageable segments, you can avoid feeling overwhelmed and make steady progress on your tasks. The technique is based on the idea that working in short, focused bursts can help you stay more productive and focused. These intervals are known as "Pomodoros." It involves breaking down your work into intervals, typically 25 minutes long, separated by short breaks. The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method that was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. Fortunately, there's a technique that can help you overcome these challenges and increase your productivity. In today's fast-paced world, it can be challenging to stay focused and get things done. Do you ever feel overwhelmed by your to-do list? Do you find yourself constantly checking your phone or getting distracted by emails and notifications? If so, you're not alone. Therefore, with the added updates, many other possibilities of other play styles are unlocked, thereby allowing players to try more combinations of ascension perks to survive in the changing galaxy for the long run, as they try to fight against hostile empires and endgame Crises alike. Players need to keep up to date with the latest ranking since the old overpowered Ascension Perk might be very weak in the current iteration of the game. Updated November 11, 2023, by Evan Arnoldi: With the ever-evolving galactic properties as the game gets its updates, more of Stellaris' Ascension perks are becoming viable to play with, while others might suffer instead and become no longer reliable for both veterans and beginners of the game. Depending on the player’s priorities and the direction they want to take their empire in, certain perks may prove indispensable in the long run, while others may give them a head start on their goals in Stellaris' early game. RELATED: Stellaris: Rare AI Personalities In-Gameĭue to the limited number of ascension slots, and the amount of time and effort it takes to unlock them, it’s prudent for players to think over their choices carefully before making their decision. Once a player finishes any tradition tree, they’ll unlock a slot for an ascension perk of their choosing that can define an empire’s vision and ambitions, or even the fate of their civilization. Themes: Do you like the themes of the perks? Are there any one of them that you don't think is clear enough? I think the RP part is important, so please come with any input you have on this.Stellaris offers many diverse avenues for its players to customize their empires and grow their power, with ascension perks being one of the most significant.Else, try pressing Shift + Alt + C if none of the above worked. No promises but if you have something I will think about it at least. This page lists the codes which may be input into the console window, a special debugging window which may be accessed on non-ironman games by pressing Shift+2, ALT+2+1, Shift+3,, ,, ,, or (key varies based on keyboard layout). Suggestions: Have any cool ideas for new perks? I am open to suggestions. If you find some error, tell me and I will fix it. Spelling: English is not my first language (however I try to check everything with a spell checker).Right now it should be quite solid, with the next update there might be a few new ones though. There is also a lot of stuff in it so I've probably missed a few things as well. However, this mod gets quite complex and in certain cases, there might be a bug.
COURTESY OF NETFLIX © 2023 Where is Lara Croft headed next? Though I wasn’t a fan of Blood Origin, just one look at Huo’s Twitter shows that she’s clearly a very passionate Tomb Raider fan and I’m super excited to see her vision for the show come to life. His last appearance was in the 2009 game Tomb Raider: Underworld.Īdditional cast members have not yet been announced, but here’s a running list we’ll use to keep tabs on the voice actors:īehind the scenes, The Witcher: Blood Origin writer Tasha Huo has been tapped as the showrunner. Heels star Allen Maldonado has also joined the cast as the character Zip, who has provided tech support to Lara in a couple of the games. In addition to Atwell, as mentioned above, Endurance crew survivor and Lara’s trusted friend, Jonah Maiava, is returning! Deadline previously reported that voice actor Earl Baylon would be back to reprise his role. I wouldn’t be surprised if Luddington said something on social media to let fans know her feelings soon. Perhaps she was asked but scheduling wouldn’t allow her to do it. We don’t know why Luddington isn’t coming back to do do the voice work for the popular heroine. Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten to hear how Atwell sounds as Lara yet since it’s not included in the first look embedded above, but she’s done voice-acting work before in Marvel’s What/If…?, 3Below: Tales of Arcadia, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, and Avengers Assemble, if you want to get an idea of how she might sound. Even though they are close in age (Luddington is 39 and Atwell is 41), the Marvel alum’s voice has a bit more gravitas, which would work well if they’re really hoping to push Lara to her iconic TR1 self. That said, I think Atwell is an excellent choice. I admit, I’m a little bummed as the rebooted trilogy was my first introduction to Lara Croft and so Luddington is Lara in my mind. Some fans are a little dismayed that Luddington isn’t returning. Who are the voice actors in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft? For now, let’s dive into what we know about the series. Supposedly, the show will bridge the gap between the reboot trilogy and the first Tomb Raider game, but more on that later. We also know that Jonah will be in the anime! If you watch the first look below, you’ll notice references to the 2013 game, like the framed photograph of Lara alongside the Endurance crew, including Jonah, Sam, Roth, and Reyes, and what appears to be a flashback to the fiery oil refinery moment in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Why are the reboot games so important to the upcoming Netflix show? Because it’s set in the same continuity. The only downside is that neither the games nor the animated show are coming until 2024, but that leaves us with plenty of time to theorize and revisit the reboot games! Plus, Amazon has also revealed plans to create a Tomb Raider franchise, including a new video game, a feature film, and a live-action television series helmed by Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Not only have we gotten our first official look at Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, but the original Tomb Raider games (1-3) are being restored and sold as a bundle for Nintendo Switch along with their respective companions. Overall, 2023 has been a strong year for Tomb Raider fans, who have been in something of a drought since Shadow of the Tomb Raider released its last DLC in April 2019 and the Alicia Vikander-led Tomb Raider film in 2018. The upcoming series is produced by video game developer Crystal Dynamics and Legendary Television, and animated by Powerhouse Animation, the company behind the Castlevania series on Netflix. The Agent Carter actress will take over for Camilla Luddington, who previously voiced Lara in all three Survivor trilogy games- Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Everyone’s favorite globe-trotting treasure hunter Lara Croft is back in action at Netflix! During Netflix’s first-ever DROP 01 event, the streamer released the official first look at the upcoming animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which will feature Marvel star Hayley Atwell voicing the titular role.
